I remember in the summer before first year, I decided to attempt to learn as much content for the course before I went. Only problem was that I had no idea what I was looking for! I read irrelevant articles and wasted a load of time. So here are some links for some useful websites that are a good read before you start the course:
- https://www.rcslt.org/ This website contains some great stories from clients about their experiences with SLT, and has a great section about what you can expect as an SLT.
- https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/speech-therapy.html This website contains information about what SLTs do and why they're needed.
- https://www.ipachart.com/ This is the IPA chart! You will use it a lot at uni - particularly in transcription classes. You don't need to learn it before you go, but it's good to familiarise yourself with so you don't get too scared when you first see it!
The most important thing to remember is that no one is expecting you to know anything about SLT when you start the course. Whether you've had past experience or not, you're all there to learn from the beginning. Just go with an open mind, and be prepared to learn lots of new things.
What to take to uni
You don't need loads of stationary for the course - some colouring pens for colour coding during linguistic modules and a pen and notepad for notes work just fine!
I tend to only bring my laptop with me to Uni - it's quicker to make notes on but that's not for everyone!
You also don't need to buy textbooks - most are available online and if not you can rent a copy from the library. I made the mistake of buying the reading list for first year and I never used them - such a waste!
